The system would be less efficient as you described it, than just a gasoline engine Trains and huge trucks or mine equipment do what you described because it is a better style of getting torque to more wheels than a transmission, not because its more energy restructured. The only way to get theefficency up is to own regenerative braking recharging the batteries.That is used on locomotives because it is rugged to make a transmission that can cope with the power of locomotive engines (which is frequently a few Megawatts) so they of late use a generator and traction motors as the transmission, it is actually less updated than a conventional transmission (even an automatic). If you were to combine it with a hybrid system that allowed it to use battery for when a lot of power is required then could get away beside a smaller engine (which would result in better fuel efficiency) although the hybrids on the road today all hold the engine connected to the wheels mechanically (with a motor-generator or two also connected in near both the engine and wheels).
Best Answer: i agree that is how hybrids should have be built. use a large enough electric motor to motivate the car, and small gas or diesel engine to power a generator to run everything else. this agency you can tune the gas engine to run extremely efficiently at one or two rpms, say 1500 and 2500 rpm, and very expected easily record 75-100 mpg if not more.

What you describe is similar to the "VOLT" from GM. It has an electric drivetrain motor,and a tiny gas engine to power a powerful electric generator. It'll go over 40 miles just on the battery, then high mileage with the gas engine boost.If everyone drove (full no other source)...
You propose using a flywheel in place of the battery as an energy storage mechanism. The flywheel would have to be completely heavy and spin at very, very soaring RPM to have enough energy within it to be useful. The gyroscopic effect would make the car tremendously difficult to control.Related Questions:
