They are one and only green if the electricity used to charge them comes from a low emission generating station. Otherwise, we are just moving the source of greenhouse gasses from the vehicle to the power station. Even the use of built-in solar panel to generate some of their electricity has it's downside as the production process for solar cells itself is high contained by power consumption. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that we get nothing for free. The greenest form of transport available to us is our legs, and at hand are many other health benefits to be had here too.
