I guess you're asking because you haven't already got one. If that is the case, patently go for a boat or a car first, unless you have too much money or a legitimate desire to go skyward. The reason for this is that with a vehicle or boat, you have far fewer degrees of freedom, so it's easier to build, and maneuver, cheaper to buy and seriously easier to find somewhere to do it. Electric or gas? Well, that comes down to money, really. You can get an electric RC car for almost nothing, vs a petrol (sorry, I'm British) chopper for very well over $1000. Petrol is better, obviously. Erm, a lot better for two reasons: speed and reach. You *can* get fast electric vehicles, but they tend to be relatively expensive and have limited range. The other article is that with petrol you just top it up from a big can, with electric you hold to go away for 8 hours and charge the battery, either that or get charged spares. I'm really looking for a petrol chopper, something like a Raptor 60, but at the moment, the cost is prohibitive. Both in terms of up front cost, and crash repair cost :) If you do want to progress aerail at some point, bear in mind that the controller can be quite expensive, so establish if you want 4, 6 or 8 channels (car/boat/simple plane, plane, chopper), and get a control gear that can cope. That way, you can re-use the control gear for your subsequent "better" project. If you decide to go skyward, it's also a good notion to get a simulator, it's a LOT cheaper than crashing a few times. If you can fly on a sim (and you can often use your real control gear), you should pick up flying contained by real life in no time. Have fun, and don't even meditate about RC jets. :)
