What people go amiss to realize is that due to the efficiency of large power plants and electric engines, plug-in hybrids and electric cars produce far less greenhouse gas than internal combustion engine cars even with the current US power grid mix which relies on 52% coal power. I probably would consider it . But there's a major problem with the theory . And to be exact BATTERIES . Advancement in battery technology hasn't progressed like other technology . Look it up yourself . Of all the great advancements in technology , battery-operated improvement ranks dead last . Scientists cannot give the impression of being to make a battery that can hold a great amount of charge without have too big of a battery or several heavy space-consuming batteries . Therein lies the difficulty . Whoever does come up next to a break-through in battery technology will undoubtedly receive a Nobel Prize . And literally will be able to metamorphosis the way the world works . I'm not one who could do it , but I'm keeping my eyes open for whoever does because I'm gonna invest a chunk of cash on their company DAY ONE !!Best Answer: Absolutely, assuming that the price didn't double the cost. I personally am looking to build an electric car and would be interested surrounded by your ideas. As for charging it would ussualy be done overnight when the draw on the electrical netwoerk is at its minimum and the electric producing companies had to wind down the generator to meet demand, also not all electricity is produced by fossil fuels the are alot of hydroelectric dam across the US. The single way I would ever buy a hybrid is if it didn't have a battery that cost $5,000. That is ridiculous! I picture the battery is stolen all the time. I had a Miata near a $200 battery that was stolen 4 times.I might. But what several people don't realize is this: Electric cars are powered by batteries. Batteries need to be recharged. How do they bring recharged? By plugging into an electrical outlet. And where does the electricity come from? Power plants. And what fossil fuel is burned in most electric power plants? Coal. If we convert to electric cars, more coal will have to be mined and burned to group the massive amount of electrical demand to power our car batteries. So won't we within affect be trading one fossil fuel (oil) for another (coal)? Won't we be trading one problem for another? Actually, I would like to see more of an emphasis on hydrogen powered vehicles.

I want to answer Polaris's comment where on earth he commented why not use Hydrogen instead of Electricity from coal burning power plants. There are no current commercially practical sources for Hydrogen other than using Electricity to extract it from a saltwater solution, OR fractionating it from oil as is done today for most of the commercial Hydrogen. Both of these use more energy to get hold of the Hydrogen than you can get from it by burning it to get energy and the byproduct marine (H2O)Related Questions:
